Review of The Act of Killing (2012) by Rich F — 03 Jan 2014
This is a real tough one to review - first and foremost this is a real tough watch, it's not something I can hand on heart recommend; it's essentially a documentary of Indonesian death squad that murdered innocent Chinese communists in mid 60s; the documentary gives the perpetrators a platform to relive and retell their story (which they are proud and boastful of their activities and lauded by their government and locals).
.. What transpires is a fascinating view in how they justified their actions, how it affected them and the impact to their lives in effectively what was genocide. It's full of paradoxes and the final scenes are compulsive viewing.
.. I could have easily marked this a 1 star but I elected to score high as it ground breaking in its approach and subject matter but think long and hard before entering this world and story as it's a very, very tough watch.
