Review of The Abyss (1989) by Gordon C — 16 Jul 2009
An excellent film, showing once again that James Cameron is one of the few directors around who can seamlessly blend big-budget special effects, action and adventure with compelling characters and an engaging story.
The special edition is worth seeing, in that it fleshes out some of the characters and their relationships, but then unfortunately has this sub-plot where the "friendly" aliens are so appalled at the violence of humanity that they threaten to destroy us with violence. Even though we're no threat to them.
These holier-than-thou aliens really piss me off.
But lo! At the last moment they decide to hold their god-like hands. Why? Because they met a man who loves his wife.
Isn't that soooooooooooooooo sweet?
It's a good thing they didn't meet me, since I'm not married. Humanity could really have been in trouble, there. Mind you, I've never tried to blow anyone up, either. Perhaps I'm just letting the important things in life pass me by, in both directions. At least, the things that aliens seem to consider important, that is.
