Review of The Abyss (1989) by Mike M — 28 Aug 2009
Widely considered to be the ugly duckling of Cameron's legendry filmography 'The Abyss' is still an incredible underwater thrill ride that has become far more popular with age. 'The Abyss' is a historic movie, not because of its brilliant storytelling or performances, it was the first film to feature fully rendered Computer generated Images, AKA the water tentacle scene.
It blew everyoneâ??s mind in 1989 and many of the effects still hold up incredibly well on its 20th anniversary. It paved the road for Cameronâ??s T1000 in T2 and basically was the beginning of digital effects in cinema.
The main criticisms placed on â??The Abyssâ?? were it's pacing. While 'Aliens' was no holds barred tour de force, 'Abyss' is a story piece, a kind of 2001 space odyssey, underwater.
The performances are incredible particularly Michael Biehn as a psychotic navy seal and Mastrantonio as the endearing uber bitch engineer. There are some incredibly powerful moments in 'Abyss' and by the time it's all said and done, you might feel slightly exhausted.
In the best possible way of course.
