Review of The Abyss (1989) by Zachary C — 01 Jun 2014
Super glad I finally took the time to watch this! I've always admired James Cameron and the ways that he's tried to take filmmaking technology and practices to the next level. In 1989 Abyss was on top of its game mixing CGI and elaborate underwater scenes.
The film is about a group of every day oil miners that help the military and a group of SEALS retrieve the wreckage of a submarine that had been destroyed during a strange attack. Ed Harris stars as Virgil a man who is a lot more heroic than it appears at first.
He thinks of his men first and is in constant struggle with his wife Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). They both do a really great job and after hearing about how the making of the film was downright hell it's almost a miracle they pulled it off.
Overall, the movie has a good story mixed with a lot of amazing effects and underwater exploration. Definitely, recommend checking this one out!
