Review of The Abyss (1989) by Blackity B — 24 Oct 2010
The Abyss is quite the experience. Better than Avatar, we can get that out of the way.
It's a fantastic adventure & exploration film...I have a thing for underwater stories, and this is one of the best out there. Captures the deeply mysterious, frightening, yet awe-inspiring grandeur of the dark black depths.
The characters are fun and 90ish, if not a bit too quirky for their own good. The two main leads are strong. The story is sustainable, and culminates with a really powerful ending. At the same time, about 5 truckloads of cheesecakes are dumped into the third act, to the point where it gets comically absurd. Cameron is not a master of subtlety, that much is clear.
Still, this is a must-see for movie fans, it is overall a great experience.
