Ahead of its time. The Abyss is a wonderful look into the world of sci-fi through the eyes of a director with a clear vision. It's nice to see a sci-fi movie from the 80s where focus of the film is not on the 'creature/monster'.
Character background and relationships between them are thoroughly developed. The Abyss is much more than just storyline about a creature, in fact it is a story about caring, life, and the human condition.
