Review of The Abyss (1989) by Jordan P — 26 Sep 2018
This film reminded me of the original The Day the Earth Stood Still, if it had been 3 hours long and boring. The assumption that because evil people have hurt others that we all are like that is ridiculous and even had to be pointed out by the main character.
Obviously in hind sight, there was no mutually assured destruction during the Cold War. The film relied so much on implausibilities that it bordered on silly, while trying to convince us that the magic of aliens makes up for plot holes.
Aside from the film being terribly written, the acting is very good and Ed Harris is gripping. The sets were intricate and interesting and felt real. I hope I never have to sit through this one again, what a waste of my time.
