Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Trent M — 27 Jul 2007
An entertaining and witty thriller that doesn't quite hold together, at least if you're anally-retentive enough to take a McGuffin seriously. It's exciting, enjoyable and there's nothing particularly wrong with it, but unless you long for the days when you could get away with using "Hello!" as an expression of surprise, a lady's stockings were particularly taboo items of clothing and everyone took tea from a china pot in the early afternoons, then it seems a little redundant post-North by Northwest.
