Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Lee T — 07 Jan 2008
Hitch certainly plays fast and very loose when it comes to the plot here, but the frantic pace and often hilarious set pieces makes this one of my all time favourite thrillers.
The film plays like a less bombastic precursor to 'North by Northwest', Donat has all the charm of Grant and carries the films easily.
Despite the films frenzied nature, Hitch still finds time for some touching smaller moments, like the farmers housewife whose instant of longing for escape and adventure is left to linger on screen for a second after being kissed by Donat.
Hitchcock's oft noted playfulness is also evident in droves making for a film that provides eighty of the most fun minutes you will find in cinema.
