Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Bill C — 28 Feb 2013
By 1935 and The 39 Steps, the Hitchcock blueprint for the future had emerged. We get the "McGuffin" and begin to understand the role ( and narrative limitations ) of the matinee idol as star. Can the Hitchcock style and almost architectural attention to detail and cinematic device take us beyond the blueprint ?
Of course we know now that the answer is yes - but The 39 Steps did little to assure that certainty. John Laurie and Peggy Ashcroft as the crofter and his wife may have been the film's strongest characters.
