Review of The 13th Warrior (1999) by Bobby L — 28 Apr 2010
This movie gets my vote for one of the most overlooked, undervalued, and not well enough remembered action/ adventures ever. Antonio Banderas stars in this John McTierian (of Die Hard fame) directed, Crichton based, Beowulf retelling. It's also rather smart, and looks excellent.
The shadows and darks are never too dark to make things confusing or needlessly complicated.
The action scenes are damn exciting, and the costumes are quite good. Near the end, a basement fight, with a few traps involved, is very edge of your seat, and the music really helps.
The scene where Banderas learns the Norsemen's language is effective and awesome. Over a night of fireside storytelling, the begrudging '13th warrior' (Banderas) listens, and listens, and listens some more, and as he begins to figure it out, it slowly becomes English for us, so as he gets it, so do we.
