"That Evening Sun" is a strong film that gives us a look at some of the brilliance that comes from the independent film makers. It's a powerful, moving drama that won't be saluted for it's flashy, big studio appearance but for it's genuine, realistic feel.

Scott Teems' remarkable true vision of small town, southern America will cause anyone who has grown up or lived in "the South" to relate on so many levels. But the strength of this film is found in the performances.

Hal Holbrook is an accomplished actor with many great performances under his belt but none better than this. Abner Meecham isn't just a cranky old man. He's a much more complex character and Holbrook brings these complexities out flawlessly.

Meecham leaves his nursing home and makes his way back to his farm which is, thanks to his son, now leased by Lonzo Choat (played brilliantly by Ray McKinninon) and his family. Meecham still considers the farm his setting up a series of confrontations and trouble.

The interactions between the two are intense, occasionally disturbing, and sometimes funny. At times you're not certain which to sympathize with since both are flawed and sometimes handle their situations the wrong way.

The sweet, elegant brief appearances by Dixie Carter are wonderful. The film is also very well written and shows the power of good, strong drama. The film does get a little too quirky close to the end before finishing well.

Also, the movie has completely useless profanity that adds nothing whatsoever to the film. Strong performances, strong story, and an amazing job of bringing the south to life make this a powerful movie.
