Review of Testament of Youth (2015) by Darren M — 04 Jul 2015
This is without doubt, one of the finest and most moving films ever made. How this film wasn't released at awards season is a mystery to me. It would have garnered many nominations, especially for Alicia Vikander, James Kent, photography, supporting actors, music and screenplay, and of course best picture. The film is a masterpiece from beginning to end. I have no inclination to tell anyone about the story, which should be known to anyone who reads a basic synopsis, but I will say that the film is absolutely extraordinary on all levels. Alicia Vikander gives the greatest most natural performance I've seen by any actor in years. If she doesn't get nominated for an Oscar next year I will be shocked. And Kit Harrington was superb as well. Taron Egerton steals every scene he's in, and he has some of the most profoundly moving movements in the film. Above all, the direction is exemplary. There is never one moment where I was not fascinated by the choices made; the edits, the music, the silences-all serving to move the plot forward. I felt every emotion the characters felt, due to the ingenious choices by the director and actors. Kent chooses long moments of silence for reflection on the catastrophic losses experienced by Vera and others. The ending will blow you away. It all comes full circle, and we are drenched in the feelings and memories of her beloved friends.
The poetry read in the film is so great you will cry just listening to it, especially at the end, when it all takes on deeper meaning. The screenplay is phenomenal.
I can't believe this film is not in large mainstream distribution. If it were released in December it would have been nominated for Oscars etc. It's amazing to me how certain films get overlooked just because of their release and distribution schedule. All I can say is I saw this film twice, and I have never been so moved by a film in this particular way. It is a tribute to a lost generation of youth. And most surprising, it is a cry for an end to wars. Vera Brittain is a name we all should know, and this film goes far beyond doing her story justice. This is a masterpiece for the ages. See it for yourself. Go by yourself one quiet night, and you will be transformed completely. It is a love story and a friendship story combined. It will give you faith in humanity, all the while shocking you into a state of disbelief that something so insane as war could even exist.
James Kent deserves every accolade possible, as does the film. And Alicia Vikander gives a once in a lifetime performance.
