Review of Terminator Salvation (2009) by James S — 22 Jan 2014
This movie feels very different from the rest of the series. It's set post-Judgement Day, in the thick of the human-machine war, as John Connor and the rebels fight for humanity's survival.
We see some familiar characters, if not familiar faces. John Connor is back, played decently by Christian Bale (although, for some reason, he's not in charge of the rebels, which counteracts the end of T3). We also meet Marcus Wright, a man from 'our time' who has been pulled out, and whose purpose seems obscure until the film's climax. He is played, also averagely, by Sam Worthington. Kyle Reese is back, and played OK by Anton Yelchin. The rest of the supporting cast is humdrum, with the notable exception of Helena Bonham Carter.
The themes are obvious and not very nuanced, unlike T2. You know exactly what's up until the film's one twist at the end. The characters experience a small amount of growth, but again, it's obvious.
A ho-hum film. I only watched it to be ready for Terminator 5 when it comes out. I'll let you know if it matters in 2015.
