Review of Tender Mercies (1983) by Bob S — 11 May 2009
Former country and western legend (fictional) Mac Sledge is all about strength of character amidst opportunity for weakness. Duvall is a force on-screen. His moments of reflection, subtle gestures and mannerisms overshadow any spectacular tirades or scene-stealing flamboyance typical for Oscar winning performances.
The movie is slow paced, but Sledgeâ??s story of redemption and his commitment to his family and values are very appealing. Older fans may enjoy the old school C&W songs â?? many sung by Duvall himself.
