Review of Tender Mercies (1983) by Sarah G — 15 Aug 2010
I wish I had been able to see this film before I saw Crazyheart because of course the comparisons are made automatically. To me this film is not as dark and it's protagonist is nowhere near as big a trainwreck.
The film seems simpler, less complex in the message it is trying to convey. At the same time there is a much stronger religious overtone to this film versus Crazyheart. Strong performances are given by all and especially by Duvall, one of our most underrated actors and someone who could easily be all of our grandfather.
The pacing will make it difficult for most to watch but it does allow the film to unfold and delve into the themes it wants to. Good film.
