Review of Ten Canoes (2006) by Jj M — 25 May 2011
David Gulpilil (Walkabout, The Last Wave, Rabbit Proof Fence) charismatically narrates a story that frames around another story, each of which exlpores aspects of tribal rituals, comradarie and cross-interaction.
The pace is slow and deliberate, but I would have the utmost of respect for a film like this because it unobjectively speaks a tale centred around ancient aboriginal customs and displays numerous quirks and wisdom of a race that have survived for millennia.
The tale itself bears a tragic but ultimately affirming message. It is well acted too and is filmed against a lush background in the Australian outback.
