Review of Tell No One (2006) by Natalie S — 23 Mar 2009
Very well lensed... phenomenal cinematography and well framed throughout. The pacing is well thought out, teetering expertly between tender, human moments... and scenes of unbelievably realistic, eye-popping action.
The "human" parts are in many ways the least "believable" parts of the film. At times, these scenes are a bit too "over-wrought" and are absolutely drenched in forced sentimentality. It's not a completely unbearable aspect of the film, but most European movies do have a certain "signature" to them where character development is often achieved through over-exageration of emotions... and that is certainly the case in TELL NO ONE.
To be fair....TELL NO ONE swings the pendulum to the extreme on both sides...The soft, tender, humane scenes may be gushy and overblown... but they are every bit as overblown and gushy as the action scenes. Director Canet seems at times, to have difficulties mixing the two extremes together.
The cast does very well with the script and there are many twists and turns but none that any seasoned movie-goer won't see coming from some distance.
Watch it once...
