Review of Taxidermia (2006) by Peter B — 07 Oct 2007
Upon first viewing I was hypnotized--simultaneously repulsed and unable to remove my attention. Though I'd taught the concept for years, I never had a true understanding of abjection until this film.
Stunning cinema, both visually and conceptually. One of a number of Eastern European films I loved at first sight--a kind of dark, visceral version of magic realism in the vein of Little Otik. More than any other film, this one's entirely of/about the grotesque body.
The last scenes of the third act are breathtaking and unforgettable.
