Review of Tarnation (2003) by Antonia T — 01 Oct 2007
Accusations of narcissism against the director come from people who are afraid to look at themselves as honestly as he looks at his own life; a life that is often ugly and tragic. Beauty lies in how he puts the shattered pieces together and makes sense out of senseless experiences.
The artistic process becomes a sort of narrative therapy for the director. Those who watch the film openly and honestly will at least appreciate the courage it takes to share such a story. Others, still, will see a bit of themselves in the film and -- far from getting depressed -- will find hope from such a display of human resilience.
