Review of Tarnation (2003) by Andreas B — 23 Mar 2011
Possibly the best documentary I have ever seen, if you can call it a documentary. Tarnation is a knockout debut from Jonathan Caouette, a doc he put together on his computer for $218, culled from home movies and other artifacts of his life.
He chronicles his experience growing up gay and living in Texas and New York with a mentally ill mother. Since he was eleven, Caouette finds solace form his traumas in musicals, horror movies and pop music.
His film defies description, but damn if it isn't amazing.
