Review of Taking Woodstock (2009) by Jason P — 08 Nov 2010
After delivering two masterpieces (Brokeback Mountain and Lust, Caution) director Ang Lee takes somewhat lighter material. No lost loves or people involved in tragedy, but just a boy growing up and accidently becoming part of what would later be seen as a historical happening.
Although the story is somewhat too slowpaced and not all characters are properly fleshed out, it does manage to give a brilliant envision of the time. I love the brilliant scenery in which we see nothing but the main character strolling through an endless pile of stoned hippies and nude people.
All carefully staged out and it never becomes tacky. The movie is eventually the celebration of a lost era and at the same time a very endearing coming-of-age story. Not to be missed by anyone whose heart still longs for the seventies.
