Review of Taking Chance (2009) by Seth S — 18 Jul 2012
Taking Chance is a little known HBO movie. The topic of the movie is something that non-military people probably know nothing about.
The story is of Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl. He decides to escort the remains of 19 year old Chance Phelps. Chance has died in Iraq, and the body needs an escort to take it home. Lt. Colonel Strobl takes the job. The movie follows the entire process, from beginning to end. This is a quietly emotional film that never manipulates the viewer.
Kevin Bacon is the one and only star of the movie. What a performance. As I said, the emotions are all subdued, and real. Bacon must carry the movie, and he does a great job of that. A quietly moving performance.
Overall, it's a shame that more people haven't seen this movie. There is nothing flashy about it. It is just a solidly told story about something that needs more recognition.
"You are his witness now. Without a witness, they just disappear." 8/10.
