Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Kevin O — 22 Mar 2008
The first installment of Chan Wook Park's "Revenge Trilogy" is simply amazing, probably the most complex and gut wrenching of all the three movies. While it doesn't have the suspense of "Oldboy" or the style and flair of "Lady Vengeance", "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" thrives in its characters mainly because they're all good and at the same time all flawed as well. Yet like the title says, you have sympathy for all of them and all feel for them as they take revenge and meet their own demise. It starts a little slow, and its a lot simpler than "Oldboy" or "Lady Vengeance" but it is very good in its own right and shows the seeds that led to those two movies.
A fantastic movie that needs to be seen by anyone who considers themselves a fan of cinema!
