Along with 'Kiss me Deadly' this is one of the bleakest films to come out of this period of Hollywood. If it wasn't for the great performances of Lancaster and Curtis (when they're on screen together the scenes sizzle) and the jazzy script it would be a bit unrelenting.
As it is you can't help but admire the balls of everyone involved to produce this film. Lancaster is one of the great screen villains and you'd almost sympaphise with Curtis if his character wasn't so slimy.
Stars today wouldn't have the nerve to play such repelent characters. Thank god for these two legends!
