Review of Sweet Sixteen (2002) by Dave C — 18 Aug 2007
The staged attack scene midway through the film confirms Liam as a killer early on. He is not an evil person, but from this moment on we shouldn't be surprised by what follows. Those who accused this film of idealising the suffering of working class people hail from the same Daily Mail/Telegraph quarters as is to be expected.
Those annoyed by Sweet Sixteen's tendency towards melodrama have a fair point though. Particularly in the second-half we find Sweet Sixteen developing something of a soap-opera sensibility. It doesn't look good coming from an auteur who prides himself on realism.
Still, everyone has a very convincing chemistry and while the screenplay doesn't always pick up the direction gives it a sense of honest plausibility. Still, it is a downer and not recommended for the mood-affective.
