Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Eytan D — 06 Aug 2012
Darkly humorous, intensely violent, and at times incredibly sad, Tim Burton's adaptation of Sondheim's masterwork is a success. Sweeney Todd is not only a visual beauty (no matter how gory it is) but also a feast for the ears.
The voices of the A-list cast are very good and they are balanced with great performances. Burton's visual eye is a star here, but Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter nearly steal the show as the Demon Barber and Mrs.
Lovett. Depp presents what could be his best performance since Edward Scissorhands (Yep, not even Jack Sparrow can top this one), and Bonham Carter is delightfully wacky. Sondheim's brilliant score clashes perfectly with Burton's style, and in the end, Sweeney Todd is one of the best movie musicals in years.
