Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Gill L — 06 Oct 2013
Love this movie! This is one of the few musicals that was successfully made into a movie. I feel like it was PERFECTLY cast and that it was transferred to the big screen and able to remain a full, enjoyable story without plot holes.
Johnny Depp was fabulous as always and it's always wonderful to see him and Helena Bonham Carter work together on projects. Together there are flawless at bringing Tim Burton's ideas to life. Sascha Baron Cohen and Alan Rickman were the shockers for me.
Seeing them perform roles such as this as perfectly as they did really brought something special to this film. Jaime Campbell Bower was also fantastic in his role and portrayed every emotion of the character extremely well.
Laura Michelle Kelly also deserves some attention specifically in the way she portrayed Lucy as the beggar woman. I found her singing to be absolutely perfect in those moments and although she didn't have much screen time, she commanded attention whenever present in the film.
And most importantly to me, Ed Sanders was FANTASTIC in the role of Toby. He may have been my favourite piece of this movie puzzle. His musical performances were spot on and despite the fact that he's put into the mix with messed up characters like Todd and Mrs.
Lovett, he still has your attention and emotions throughout the film. The only negative comment I could possibly come up with is that I felt Jayne Wisener may not have been the best choice for Johanna.
I just didn't connect with her way of portraying the character and didn't enjoy her numbers in the film. Other than that, the performing, directing and story were spectacular! A must see without a doubt.
