Review of The Hedgehog (2009) by Bevan S — 30 Jan 2012
A poignant and wistful movie. Paloma does so much more than document adult hypocrisy with her camcorder.. She uses the lens to focus on what gives her life meaning. This fuels Paloma's creativity and her sensitive artistic temprament manifests a death wish.
Meanwhile, the burgeoning relationship between the new tenant, Mr Ozu, and Renee, the concierge, has an almost fairy tale quality. It lulls the audience into thinking that things will end happily ever after; that Paloma will find a reason to live as the only two adults she can relate to find love.
A twist at the end, though plausible, takes the movie in unexpected direction. Events profoundly affect Paloma but the script does not make it easy for the audience leaving them to speculate on her future as the credits roll.
