Review of Superman II (1980) by E L — 27 Jul 2012

Three years after the original Superman, comes it's sequel ... directed by Richard Lester.

When terrorists threaten to destroy the Eiffel Tower, Superman thwarts the effort by sending the bomb-rigged elevator from the tower, into outerspace and exploding. In doing so, he inadvertently frees three Kryptonian outlaws, led by General Zod (Terrence Stamp). Zod and his two accomplices were put in eternal orbit forever by Superman's father ... Jor-El. As the three escape, they descend onto Earth and eventually look to conquer all.

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) is in prison and waiting for the perfect opportunity to escape. We learn of a black box he has that picks up on airwaves and intends to find out Superman's secret, up North. After Luthor escapes, he arrives at "The Fortress of Solitude" & learns of Zod and company. Luthor intends to find them and together get rid of Superman for good.

So, as the world is going to hell in a handbasket, Clark Kent is with Lois working on a story for the Daily Planet. She discovers his true identity and they fall in love. Superman then learns he cannot be immortal and love a human, so he must choose. He chooses his love for Lois and thus becomes human, which in turn makes him feel pain. After being severely beaten in a bar fight, Clark learns of Zod's plan and his intentions.

Can Superman get his super powers back before Zod rules the world?

First off, the story here is weaker than the original. It failed to mesh together and flow nicely. There are also some headscratching moments. For instance, when Superman goes back to his fortress to gain his super power back - after being told he can't, it's never explained how it happened. It just shows him telling his dad he failed, cuts away & the next time we see him, all his powers are back. As for the screenplay it's ok, but could have been better. Visually, the film looks good, it should be known that special effects take a back seat to action sequences this time around. That isn't a bad thing either, because the action and acting carry the film. There's comedy thrown in, but for the most part it was dull and got annoying.

Christopher Reeve and Terrence Stamp really excel in their respective roles. Stamp gives Zod a take no prisoners, dictatoresque attitude and presence that you hate & despise. Reeve is great again as Kent/Superman, he just fits the role so naturally and his screen presence is phenomenal. Gene Hackman doesn't have a major role as Lex Luthor, but delivers nicely. Margot Kidder lights up each scene as Lois Lane - the chemistry she and Reeve had jumps out at you and makes the viewing more enjoyable.

I'll end by saying, 'Superman II' delivers good action and great acting. It is worth owning for superhero & comic book fans. The film though, falls short with the story & screenplay .... lacking the punch of the original.
