Review of Super Fly (1972) by Ryan V — 18 Jun 2012
The most interesting part about Superfly's plot is that it spouts polemic messages about ghetto politics as it revels in a romanticized fantasy of the gangster lifestyle. The story's focus is on Priest (Ron O'Neal), a small-scale coke pusher looking for one last score before he vanishes from the game forever.
His struggle, which is illuminated by Curtis Mayfield's wonderful soundtrack, is hampered by a cabal of corrupt cops who wish him placed into their indentured servitude. Superfly has plenty of jive talk, whup-ass, greasy sex, and other grindhouse charms, but like many blaxploitation films its principle asset is in its legendary music.
