Review of Super (2010) by Justin H — 23 May 2015
This movie was great. My opinion might change after I re watch it, though (in a positive way, I think). I can see why some people may not like this movie, but I feel like its because they missed the point.
The movie, at heart, is about a psychopath that thinks he's a super hero. Its a "superhero movie" with a bit of realistic spin and a bit of a dark and unsettling undertone, but later on in the movie the context of the violence becomes less like comic book violence and more real and disturbing.
The movie keeps a consistent tone that I can only describe as uncomfortable. The film almost feels like it has two tones running parallel to one another and through out the movie it confused my emotions and not in a bad way.
Small jokes were told in disturbing situations (extremely disturbing situations) and provoked some really nervous laughter. Thanks to the unsettling tone and horribly graphic violence it is the only movie in recent days to make me feel sick to my stomach and I have to give it props for that.
Real violence isn't fun and the fact that the director chose to put it in what looks like a happy fun super hero movie is fucking awesome.
