Review of Sunshine (2007) by Dave R — 29 Jan 2012
New Scientist did a review of the (bad) science in this film. The size of a nuclear bomb needed to do what they intended to do would be far, far larger than what this film presents. Then you'd have to get the bomb into the suns core, which is a HUGE problem conveniently ignored by the film. Also, as the sun cools or stops burning it actually gets hotter. (i.e. hot enough to extinguish life on earth.).
But, if you can suspend any knowledge of science for a little while, it's pretty good (the first 2/3 anyway). Anyway, all a film needs to do is create the beautiful illusion of science for an hour or so. Most of the audience will not be physicists, right? ;) This film is really beautiful. Amazing CGI.
I am a Cillian Murphy fan, so of course I enjoyed him. Chris Evans was a surprise in a serious role. There was a "spiritual" aspect, but that wasn't as fully developed as it could have been, imo.
Excellent soundtrack by Underworld (plus John Murphy).
