Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Jesse M — 29 Aug 2009
An absolute stone cold classic that will never date itself or lose any of it's nearly 60 year luster. A pitch perfect cast and top flight script, Wilder's genius direction, great cinematography.
...I could go on and on. Great touches of film lore are sprinkled throughout the film, from the witty banter on the Paramount lot to the casting of famed german silent-era director Eric Von Stroheim as Max, the caretaker of Norma Desmond- played to perfected madness by Gloria Swanson.
Cecil B. Demille plays himself and look for Buster Keaton in a brief scene. William Holden stars as down on his luck scriptwriter Joe Gillis and also provides narration. Holden received a best actor nom.
here and deservedly so. About as flawless and constantly rewarding as film gets.
