Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Joe D — 05 Sep 2012
Just watched this via Amazon Prime on my Bluray player wireless internet. One of the 1950's classics, it's a bit beyond film noire . Joe Gillis (Bill Holden), a scrabbling Hollywood writer is a tragic anti-hero.
Cast-off silent film star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) and houseman Max (Eric von Stroheim) occupy a huge dingy mansion where Gillis blunders while on the run from car repossession. You will also see a very young and non-monosyllabic Jack Web.
I had seen parts of it on late-nite TV years ago. This was my first complete viewing. I got the urge by the news of an up-coming adaptation to a musical(!) by the Minneapolis Music Theater. MMT is really out there doing musical versions of Gilligans Island, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Summer of '42, etc.
