Review of Sunflower (1970) by Andrejs P — 13 Dec 2011
3: A surprisingly epic story and not exactly what I was expecting, but I should have known better. After all, it is De Sica. This is about as tragic and romantic as love stories get, but thinking back on it, I'd say the story would have been better served by a more conventionally-minded director.
De Sica is still too stuck on/influenced by his neorealistic tendencies. He doesn't quite know how to get the most out of an epic love story like this, at least not in the way someone like David Lean does.
The elements are all here, but it sometimes plays too much like a documentary. It doesn't flow like it should. Still, a very worthy effort.
