I never saw him again.

A young Italian couple fall in unexpected love and she steals the playboy's heart. They have an amazing life and marriage. However, World War II hits their country hard and the young man is whisked into a terrible battle in Siberia where he is lost and never seen from again. The military presumes he's dead. She goes on an amazing search for true love.

"Didn't we already get married?".

Vittorio De Sica, director of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow; The Voyage; After the Fox; A Place for Lovers; Marriage Italian Style; Two Women; and The Roof; delivers Sunflowers. The storyline for this picture was excellent, well paced, and brilliantly portrayed. The cast delivers remarkable performances and includes Sophia Loren and Mastroianni.

"I'll take the scorpions over marriage.".

I recently came across this on Netflix and added it to my queue. I saw Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow and thought it was okay with a similar cast and the same director. This was infinitely better and easily my favorite Loren film. I thought she delivered her character well and this tale is well told. I strongly recommend seeing this underrated classic.

"Where can you take me with this tiny creature?".

Grade: A.
