Review of Summertime (1955) by Saiiara S — 20 Apr 2008
I have to say no to this. david lean bothers me and im not sure I can put my finger on what it is. what I can pin down is that his films tend to be sold highly on spectacle, and I must say that the photography is quite good, but it doesnt make a movie.
this film in particular felt like I was watching the travel channel much of the time. venice is pretty...we get it. beyond that theres not much of a movie here. a middle aged woman has an affair and struggles with her personal beliefs about such actions.
bergman might have made a great film with this. lean opts for surface level observations and pretty pictures.
