Review of Summer Palace (2006) by Jonathan H — 25 Mar 2008
Reminded me a lot of the Dreamers. Both movies are about a sexual youthful idealism being crushed by harsh reality and social revolutions. The movie has a pace that will lose most people, but for the patient it's a beautiful little movie with strong naturalistic performances.
The director, Lou Ye, has been banned from making movies in China because of this film and its honesty towards the Chinese government. With that sacrifice in mind, it's a shame this movie will go overlooked by most.
