Review of Summer Hours (2008) by Miriam R — 01 Jul 2009
Perhaps not one of the most memorable or unique works to come out of France in the last decade, but it is nevertheless a well-made and enjoyable film. Although the lead role is played adeptly by the lesser-known Charles Berling, Juliette Binoche and Jeremie Renier arguably steal the show in support roles with typically excellent acting performances.
Despite the seemingly dull subject matter, the film is quite engrossing from the start, perhaps only faltering near the conclusion, which is a little drawn-out. The themes of nostalgia, family relationships and the value of objects are all contemporarily relevant, ensuring that the film provides plenty of material for discussion and analysis.
