Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Junior I — 27 Nov 2008
Classic Miike craziness played out for high art as much for hard hitting violence. A misunderstood film by some but revered throughout the world as a masterful piece of film making.
I actually loved the bad "Engrish" pronunciation throughout the film lol I felt it really added to the campness of the whole film & Miike being the genius he is knew it would work for the better rather then the worst. Also the fact the cast is made up of the best japanese actors each generation has to offer is a beautiful touch real japanese cinema fans will only truly appreciate.
Tarantino does his thing in his high profile cameo, which fortunately doesn't overshadow the entire film. The cinematography is gorgeous using the washed out colour pallet to astonishing effect & really showing off the epic set & costume design on offer.
So hows the action you ask? well it wouldn't be Miike without balls to the wall violence & this has it in spades. The greatest weapon of the western era, "the Gatling gun" makes a welcome appearance in the show stopping finale that is a non stop visual tour de force especially when the setting turns to a beautiful snow covered abyss.
All in it's a required taste for the open minded cinema fan, others not willing to push their limits don't need to bother, you're not wanted here lol.
