Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Don S — 20 Jul 2011
Outlandish meshing of Eastern and Western cultures. Plot and characters are hackneyed (reminiscent of Last Man Standing and a myriad of other films), but the presentation is fresh enough to add some life to those old bones. Johnny Depp would have been perfect as the hero. Ito played him as quirky yet big-hearted and an amazing gunslinger. The western motif worked well, though the Asian accents were a bit off-putting in this setting. Loads and loads of gun play with decent effects. I liked it, but could see how it is not for everyone.
