Review of Sugar (2010) by Mike V — 19 Apr 2009
This is not just a sports movie, but is also really a very human story about the the difficulties that a foreign baseball player who speaks little English has to deal with in trying to make it to the Big Leagues in the US.
What was particularly interesting to me was the way it captured the intense competition among talented players trying to reach the pinnacle of the sport. Rising young layers who are better than 99.9% than most of us can ever dream to be suddenly find themselves in competition with others who are also better than 99.
9% of us, and only some of those have whatever extra is required to make it further--while the others, who are perhaps not used to failure, suddenly find themselves stopped in their tracks.
