Review of Sugar (2010) by Bob S — 31 Jan 2012
One of the saddest movies you'll ever watch and one of the most authentic baseball movies that I have ever seen. This low-budget indie flick isn't actually about baseball at all, but about a young Dominican man pursuing his dreams in America without English or a second career to fall back on.
The language barriers that lead to miscommunication, failure and heartbreak were eye-opening, but something I should have imagined. Sugarâ(TM)s story is a tribute to the perseverance and will of the Hispanic ballplayers that do make it.
You feel such a bond with the title character that you don't accept the ending - you want to know what happens in the next chapter of his life.
