Review of Suffragette (2015) by Tom H — 03 Mar 2016
What an important story to tell! A classically produced period film with solid characters and functional film structure. Would have liked to forego some of the political circumstances and historical figures to truly focus on one woman's pain and anguish.
Her personal story, and Carey Mulligan's performance, drew me through the otherwise politically complicated film. The most resonate moments sat in her personal struggles and wish for a life with more opportunity, hope for a better future.
I'm pretty sure Michael Fassbender's first oscar nod came from an equally revolutionary role. Surprised that the cast of Sara Gavron's epic look at the fight for votes for women didn't garner equal attention, regardless of the politics surrounding the film's own release.
