Review of Suffragette (2015) by John W — 12 Jan 2018
If you're in the mood for a grim portrayal of the suffragette movement and the abuse of women in London in the early 20th century, this movie is for you. The main character, expertly played by Carey Mulligan, personally suffers every abuse the screen-writer could dream up including being left homeless by her husband, having her husband put her son up for adoption, being fired from her job for being a suffragette, being beaten by the police, being imprisoned, being force-fed in prison, and watching her fellow suffragette kill herself by throwing herself in front of a horse while the king was watching.
It is a pity the screen-writer was so hell-bent on pushing a message and did not provide a more nuanced picture of a suffragette.
