Review of Sudden Death (1995) by James S — 04 Mar 2008
Van Damme isn't exactly known for appearing in quality movies. His films usually leave a whole lot to be desired, cast offs that the current crop of action stars have passed on previously no doubt, which makes Sudden Death such an absolute treat.
It probably started life as a Die Hard sequel script (Die Hard on Ice?) as terrorists, and I mean proper nasty ones, take control of a hockey arena in a bid to steal some cash.
It's tightly paced and the script is above average for this kind of stuff. Everything that happens has a point, the only duff moment being when Van Damme takes to the ice which doesn't really make sense. Powers Boothe - who would go on to play the vice president in 24, the very man he is holding hostage here - hams it up brilliantly as the head baddie and the whole thing builds to a suspenseful and explosive climax.
Sudden Death is that rare thing in that it's a small action movie which delivers a whole lot more than it promises. Highly recommended stuff.
