Review of Sudden Death (1995) by Sterling W — 11 Jan 2011
A cunning terrorist. A crowded enclosure. A disgraced hero. Explosives. Sound familiar? It is. Jean Claude Van-Damme stars in "Sudden Death", another "Die-Hard" ripoff, this which takes place in a sports arena.
It sounds like the same old song, and it pretty much is, but "Sudden Death" is actually a very solid addition to the action genre. Powers Boothe is a wonderful villain. He seems charming and menacing almost simultaneously.
He heads a group of interesting baddies (who may quite possibly the most sadistic terrorists I've witnessed in movies) who ultimately serve as punching bags for Van Damme, who is actually quite solid as the fire marshal assigned to keep the sports arena safe.
The film does a good job making the actual event (Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals) correlate to what goes on as Van Damme tries to stop the terrorists. The movie is very violent, and it may detract from an otherwise solid film, but all in all, "Sudden Death" is an entertaining action flick that deserves some mention.
