Review of Suburban Girl (2007) by Stephen L — 14 Jan 2009
Loved it. I did not know what this film was even about. It was a Netflix recommendation, and I dig Sarah Michelle Gellar, so I did the XBox "instant demand" for it.
When I quickly realized that Alec Baldwin was the love interest, I was surprised. I spent the first 40 minutes or so thinking to myself that I liked Brett (Gellar) and that it was an interesting story... but Baldwin was just not working for me. I got that she was in love with his wisdom and experience, but he was lacking a certain charm that I thought his character needed. I kept thinking I could buy into the whole thing better if it was, oh, say, Richard Gere.
As I got further into the film and started seeing more negative attributes to Baldwin's character, he started to work better for me.
It also became about so much more than Baldwin and even his relationship with Brett.
I soon realized I was in love with Brett. First of all, I think Brett is a great name for a girl. Second of all, she was a very real character. She was educated, mature, and independent. At the same time she was vulnerable and learning. I could relate to her.
Towards the end of the film, it became clear that this was not the story of two editors falling in love. This was the story of Brett, of a young editor learning how to begin her life.
I also enjoyed the grammatical jokes and references ;).
