Review of Submarine (2011) by Jeri P — 25 Jan 2012
Ayoade deliver a solid debut with "Submarine". A soft drama with an continuous funny undertone. I felt it was kind of a mixture of "Squid and the Whale", "Rushmore" and "Fish Tank" in different ways. All of them really good films in my opinion.
The film is well made and there are some nice pictures and some very nice smaller features here. It looks a bit old in a way, without ruining the quality of the shots. The strongest feature of the film was for me the composition. There is a great pace here and the film develops nicely, where things often happen in the mix.
I felt it lacked a bit of atmosphere and it was not very inspiring either. It's also quite easy to see that the director is very inspired by Wes Anderson. Nothing wrong with that, but I felt it lacked a litle bit of distinctive features from a debut director. Still, I found it to be an enjoyable film about a young boy and his first taste of love.
